MUSIC WALK BEFORE HALLOWEEN!  OCTOBER 22!

LIVE MUSIC ALL OVER DOWNTOWN FORT MYERS THIS SATURDAY!

The 3rd Saturday event features live music at over a dozen venues, including restaurants, galleries, and bars, plus street performers all over the beautiful downtown streets. Music Walk venues showcase a variety of music, from punk, rockabilly, indie, reggae, and folk, to piano, steel drums, and more. The event is the largest of its kind regionally. Music Walk is an all ages event that starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. or close at many venues. Free parking available.

Our Haunted Walk 2011 is entitled Carnival Frightmare!!! This brand new event features a series of fright stations, including the Blood Butcher Shop with brutal victims, the Unfriendly Clown section, our traditional cemetery scene, and a new features-the Sensory Deprivation Tunnel, complete with fog machines and strobe lights.                                                                                                                                             The Sensory Deprivation Tunnel, where we deprive you of your normal senses and prey on the others!

This event is Adult-oriented, minimum customer age is 13 years old. 12 Scary Nights!

My good friend Ab Hernandez from Gulf Coast Times has a show at Space 39 that all should come in and see it is entitled Americana:  A Visual Anthology.  When people think of Americana they think of 1776 when colonist fought for their independence, or they think of the great depression and coming out of it .   Some of us have reasons not to remember the time of 1965-1975  many of us were just growing up at that time and had no grasp of what was going on at that time with Vietnam and other economic concerns of inflation just starting to burst.  It kind of reminds us of what times we are going through now as adults.

Ab Hernadez has captured his patriotism and cultural heritage in his collection of works this time in his Americana : A Visual Anthology.  The contemporary  artist is a Cuban-American .  He studied at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and has been mixing artistic styles his entire career. He went on to obtain a Bachelors degree in Mass Communication from Trinity International University in Miami. 

Ab never planned to create a series of Americana type paintings he just created for the sake of creating.  He said “that after having 6 paintings into his work he realized he had a theme each individual piece I collected had an underlying Americana theme that I married with the idea of an anthology , a collection of literary works chosen by the compiler .  Since I create paintings , my collection of works turned into a visual anthology”

One of his signature pieces” Marv the Jock” was inspired from a jacket that ab found in a vintage store. The jacket told a unique story Ab explains 

“I came across this Letterman jacket. It was old and worn and had some tears in the fabric. Not exactly the kind of thing you would actually wear if you bought it anyway. However, to me, it told a unique American story. The first thing that came to mind was, why would anyone let this jacket go? Some kid named Marv in his early teens wore this jacket with great pride. He was a wrestler, he played football and given the silver heart pendant still attached to the torn letter on his jacket, he had a romance in his life. 

In his search to find answers about his inspiration he found out that Marv went to Glendale High School in Springfield Missouri,  The jacket was worn sometime in the early sixties.   There are still many unanswered questions . ” So where is Marv again , and why would he let the treasure go?

These questions you will have to ponder while you are looking at Ab Hernandez collection ” Americana: A visual Anthology showing the entire month of October at space 39.

The 1^st Annual Labor Day Spirits and Spokes Tour will be taking place Sunday, September 5, 3p- 8p.  This is an informal fundraiser, with the organizers donating the proceeds to the United Way.  This is NOT an organized, certified, or sanctioned event by the United Way or any other cycling club, but rather a group of people that want to support the businesses downtown and give any proceeds to a local charity!

You can join the Facebook page (search by event title) but here is the low-down:

1.       If you ride your bicycle and wear a helmet, a $20 donation gets you a wristband.

2.       If you ride with no helmet or walk it, a $25 donation gets you a wristband.

3.       A 50/50 will take place.

4.       Other raffle prizes to include gift certificates from the bars and restaurants plus a night at Hotel Indigo will be raffled off.

5.       Contest for best decorated helmet.

6.       Transportation alternatives will be suggested (cabs, etc.).

7.       Hotel Indigo is offering their $99 room rate for all participants.

8.       An indoor, secure location will be offered for participants to keep their bikes if they wish to do so (assuming folks will be calling for rides, taking a cab, or staying the night!).

9.       All paid participants will receive specials from participating businesses (appetizers, drink specials, etc. )

10.   If you are interested in participating, join the Facebook page and/or email spiritsandspokes@comcast.net as the group would like to let the businesses know, best estimate, how many folks will be participating.  (and t-shirts may or may not be ordered for the event!).

11.   Look for Dan Moser’s reference in the Florida Weekly this week and rumor has it, the News-press may do a small story as well!

Arts for ACTS August 15th “ Arabian Nights”  this will be held at the Coconut Point Hyatt .  My good friend Claudia Goode hopes you don’t miss out on such a great event .   The Proceeds enable ACT to provide a 24 hour hot line, safe emergency shelter, counseling, children’s programs, forensic sexual assault examinations, clothing and food for victims of domestic violence and their children and survivors of sexual assault in Lee, Hendry, and Glades Counties.  This year they are celebrating 32 years in operation and 22 years of hosting this fine art auction.

 My good friend Jim wanted me to remind you to Save the Date now in your planners.  This should be an evening to remember.   The proceeds from the Gala will go towards the continued restoration of this historical building for the Arts.

Designed by prominent Florida architect Nat GaillardWalker, the Old Post Office opened in 1933 as one of the nation’s finest neoclassical revival structures.  It was converted to a Federal Courthouse in 1965 and later vacated in 1998.  Many of its original fixtures were removed or destroyed and the building fell into disrepair until the Art Center took over it, dedicated to its preservation with the creation of a community cultural center.

The final restoration phase will stop deterioration of the building’s historic elements, preserve this community gem, and complete the transformation a once-abandoned building into a modern arts facility.

The Art Center has been under renovations since 2003 and, upon completion, will feature 23,000 square feet of studio, performance, classrooms, and community event space.

 Art Royale November 20, 2010 at the Lee County Alliance of the Arts  my good friend Chelsea and Lydia tell me this will be something you will never forget.  One night  celebration of art displaying the most intriguing artists . This year’s theme, IT’S ALL ELEMENTAL reflects the essence of Art Royale as an innovative showcase of art that is active, not passive, art that explores the origins and boundaries of the elements, be it, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water & Space

Live X presented by the radio station  99X rocked the City of palms last Friday night.   The band took the stage after 4 other bands.   Two years ago I got to see them play as the opening act for Velvet Revolver.   They were great then, and even better now.    The crowd was a mixture of ages many of the High Schoolers and College kids new the newer songs like “Last of my kind” and “Check my Brain” while the listeners of music of the 90′s kept requesting the older songs Like ”Would”,  “Man in the box” and the show ending encore “Rooster”    The band kept all fans young and old extremely Satisfied.  Eventsfortmyers.com  ran into a few people as well .  We saw some of our friends Lee and Collins, Heather and Mike  Himschoot,  Charly and Melanie Caldwell of Internet Services Group , Deborah Angelicchio and Don and Tara Molloy of  Riverside Realty Group rocking through out the night.

This is some of what you may expect in downtown Fort Myers on Saturday and Sunday. Last year it was great. Your family will have a good time and so will you.
