Paint the Down Town Purple is coming again in honor of Relay for Life

Fort Myers — The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Downtown –River District is just around the corner.  The downtown will be tied in Purple Ribbon Symbolizing   their support  for the Relay for life starting May 1st-7th   Many area businesses will have their windows painted in honor of painting the Downtown Purple.  Thank you  to those business have supported this event.  Downtown House  of Pizza,  Starbucks,Franklin Shops,Bennetts  Florida Rep and Joes Crab Shack.

. This “celebration of life” brings the Lee County community together in a unified effort to fight cancer.

Former and current cancer patients, their families, businesses, civic organizations, and the public are invited to take part in this exciting team event. Relay For Life takes place from 5:00PM on May 6TH  until 11:00AM on May 7th at Centennial  Park.

The evening will be filled with performances by local talent like Fellow Bliss and the Hot Flashes with Lee County Commissioner Tammy Hall as a special guests. An exhibit and sale of ‘Art by Kids with Cancer’ will be featured  as part of May’s Art Walk.

Teams from companies, churches, organizations, hospitals, and schools collect donations and can win individual and team prizes for their efforts.

“Relay For Life brings the progress against cancer to the forefront,” said Don Molloy, event chair. “Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have dealt with cancer themselves.

“The funds raised enable us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer through research, education, advocacy, and patient services,” said Beth Hayes. “Thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors like 21st Century Oncology,  Professionals in Urology , and Way –FM  the money raised by participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”

Producers of this season’s runaway hit, ‘WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, The Laboratory Theater of Florida now brings you Sam Shepard’s Tony Award Winning play, TRUE WEST. This dark comedy first opened at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater, starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinise and was received as a smash hit. It was later adapted for TV, starring Bruce Willis.

Freewheeling Lee returns unannounced to his mother’s home, rekindling the rivalry with his brother Austin. Lee’s menacing attitude draws Austin further and further into conflict until Austin must finally engage his brother in an intense psychological battle for his ideals, and perhaps even his life.

The Laboratory Theater of Florida artistic director Annette Trossbach is proud to present director Stuart Brown’s powerful TRUE WEST. Brown is a Professor of Theatre at Edison State College and President of Chaos Productions, Inc. He holds an MFA in Directing from The University of Texas at Austin and a BFA in Design from Florida State University.

Show Dates are January 26-29, February 2, 3, 5 at 8pm at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, 2301 First St. in Downtown Fort Myers. Tickets will be $20 for adults and $10 for students until the 19th of January. Starting on the 20th, tickets will be $23 for adults and $12 for students.  Music Walk Saturday November 20th

Featuring original Reggae, Punk Rock, Folk, Indie, World Music, Live Comedy and much more in the Downtown Fort Myers River District.

The monthly Music Walk event returns Novemeber 20th for its fourth month. The downtown Saturday event features live music at over 18 venues, including restaurants, galleries and bars, plus a variety of street performers all over the newly renovated downtown Fort Myers River District. Music Walk venues showcase a variety of music, from acoustic soloists to punk rock, piano, steel drums and saxophone. The event is the largest of its kind regionally. Music Walk is an all ages event that starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 2 a.m. at many businesses. Free parking available.

Music Walk partners and venues include: HOWL Gallery/Tattoo, Red Rock Saloon, Spirits of Bacchus, Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, Space 39, Cafe Matisse, French Connection Cafe, Enjewel, Happenings Magazine, Hotel Indigo, Twisted Vine Bistro, Indigo Room, Harborside Event Center, Coloring The World, City Tavern, Downtown House of Pizza, World Famous Cigar Bar, Hideaway Sports Bar, Morgan House, The Veranda Restaurant, Market America Realty, and Edward Jones Financial.

Each month has brought larger crowds and more music, with an estimated 4,000 attendees to the October event. Music Walk is organized by Andy Howl of Howl Gallery/Tattoo with the help of Roger DiCiccio of Red Rock Saloon, Suzy Lewis of Spirits of Bacchus, and Jamie Kuser of Happenings Magazine. Music Walk exists under the umbrella of the River District Alliance, a non-profit organization that manages downtown events and unifies businesses in the River District.

Highlights of the Saturday, November 20th Music Walk include:

HOWL Gallery/Tattoo – Featuring local punk/indie bands Hot House, After the Fact, and Shunt Trip!? From 7-10pm. Also catch Hot House on WINK-TV Friday Nov 19th 8am to 9am promoting the event with a live acoustic set.

Sprits of Bacchus – Live Reggae music by Aiyb & Friends.

Red Rock Saloon – Featuring live music by the Gladezmen and Big E and the Lazy Texans.

French Connection – Live music by singer/songwriter Darrell House.

Space39 – Featuring Kat Epple world flutes & Nathan Dyke on drums/didjeridoo.

The Cigar Bar – Featuring live music by Clockwork.

Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center – Comedy Night featuring host and headliner Chris Christiansen (aka Crazee CC), Magnum Jackson, Trey Sarver, Joe Mobley, Joe Simmons, Tommy Amado, Edward Deeson (aka Roadblock), and Mariannette Torres. Plus DJ Rage) and a special guest appearance by Memphis on the Radio.

Hideaway Sports Bar - A special charity event with performances by The Drunk Monkeys, Kapo Kings and Chasing Sparrows starting at 5pm

Fort Myers Art Walk Friday, Nov. 5; Saturday Art Fair Nov. 6

The next Fort Myers Art Walk is set for Friday, Nov. 5 in the downtown River District with several new art exhibits, followed by the expanded Saturday Art Fair on Nov. 6 in the Patio DE Leon.

The monthly Art Walk runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on the first Fridays. The November Art Walk will include more than a dozen art stops and will feature new art shows, live music, and the traditional after party.

Look for the seasonal Saturday Art Fair in the Patio de Leon. That event has new extended hours and now takes place from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It features 22 local artist vendors.

Some highlights of the Friday, Nov. 5 Art Walk:

- Art of the Olympians: Kayak and Sailing exhibition.

- Art League of Fort Myers: Reception for Welcome Back exhibit with an awards reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

- Arts for ACT Gallery: Opening reception for new exhibit featuring artists Diana Rutherford and Melissa Allen.

- Coloring The World: Opening of exhibit showcasing artist Elsa Morales.

- daas Gallery: Opening reception for show featuring sculptures of artist Kenneth D. Rowe.

- Gallery Showcase and Information Center at Iberia Bank(Bay view Court at First Street). New Art Walk T-shirts are available at this location as well as buttons, maps, and brochures.

- HOWL Gallery: Show featuring art from a new hybrid graphic novel based on Alice in Wonderland.  More than 40 watercolor illustrations by Sugar Ninjas artist Cayce Moyer. Live music by Cosmic Mountain at 8pm.

- Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center: Opening for new exhibit “Doors of Opportunity.”

- SKS Photoshoot: Vocalists from the Young Artists Awards program will be performing from 6-8 p.m. The performance is in conjunction with a display from BIG ARTS.

- Space 39:  Exhibit showcasing artist Michael Damico.

- The Oasis Condominiums/Renzos Designs: Exhibit featuring artist Joseph Swenarton.

Held the first Friday of every month from 6 to 10 pm., Art Walk features local and national artwork in the downtown art galleries and several art stops in the Fort Myers River District. The evening culminates with an after party at 10 p.m. The November after party will be held at Spirits of Bacchus on Hendry Street.

Another highlight of the very popular evening is the weekly Friday Night Live free concert series which takes place in the Patio de Leon. John Mooney will perform from 6 to 9 p.m.

Always a collector’s item, new Art Walk buttons will be available at galleries that night. Art Walk has its own T-shirt (in red or black). Shirts are available for a $12 donation at the Iberia Bank gallery showcase during Art Walk.

Spend a total of $100 or more during the event at participating stores and/or galleries and receive a free Art Walk t-shirt, while supplies last. Present receipts to claim shirt at IberiaBank, that night only.

A free shuttle service courtesy of Select Transportation Inc., with stops planned near the art venues, and parking at the Harborside Event Center will be available for Art Walk patrons. Shuttle stops include The Oasis Condominiums, Art of the Olympians, and Enjewel on First Street.

A map of Art Walk, transportation, and parking will be distributed by participating galleries. Art Walk is a rain or shine event. Art Walk was started by a group of art galleries and art enthusiasts and debuted in October of 2008. Art Walk is a River District Alliance event. HOWL GALLERY FEATURES THE ART OF A NEW HYBRID GRAPHIC NOVEL INSPIRED BY ALICE IN WONDERLAND. OVER 40 ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR ILLUSTRATIONS BY CAYCE MOYER.

HOWL Gallery opens a new exhibit featuring Miami based artist, Cayce Moyer and her watercolor works from the new graphic novel hybrid “A Curiouser and Curiouser Series: Pool of Tears”. The novel is inspired by the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland and features over 40 fantastical watercolor illustrations by Cayce Moyer. Pools of Tears is written by Erin Pyne and published by Florida based What the Flux Comics. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during the show. Meet the artist and the author during the Opening Reception at HOWL Gallery. Cayce Moyer previously exhibited at HOWL Gallery as part of the SUGAR NINJAS exhibit in August.

The Opening Reception will be held on Friday, November 5th, in conjunction with Fort Myers Art Walk from 6-10pm. Light refreshments provided. Exhibit continues through November.
