Abstract Alchemy

Katherine Boren

The abstract takes center stage at daas Gallery in the month of June with the wonderful art of Katherine Boren. Exquisite and experimental; Boren presents a thought provoking series of works under the title Abstract Alchemy.

Katherine Boren, originally from New York, studied at New York University and The New School, graduating from the State University of New York with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture.  Her work has been exhibited in group and solo shows in New York and California, and has been featured in Florida at the Alliance for the Arts, the Arts for ACT Gallery, Big Arts, Cape Coral Arts Studio, Brevard Art Museum, daas gallery, and Howl Gallery in juried and member shows. She is an annual contributor to the Arts for ACT auction, serves as Executive Director of the Young Artists Awards, and is past president of the Alliance for the Arts.

“My current work experiments with multiple mediums in two dimensions.  By focusing on a monochromatic palette and utilizing a combination of non-traditional materials in unexpected ways, I am attempting to emphasize the reflection of light and the use of various textures, shapes, and different grades of color saturation”, says Boren.

The exhibition will open to the public with a reception on Friday, June 4th 2010 in conjunction with the monthly Downtown Fort Myers Art Walk. The exhibition will be on display until June 26, 2010. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00pm.  Eventsfortmyers.com wants to thank Dave at the Gallery for letting them know this was coming to our area.

A Big thanks to Stuart Brown and SBDAC  for letting me know this was going on Friday night mark your calendars.

Alyce Bochette is co-director of Dance Bochette. She spent 20 years touring internationally with dance companies including Mark Morris, May O’Donnell, and Rachel Lampert.  For the May 21 event, Bochette will dance one solo piece, “Suspension,” choreographed by May O’Donnell in 1939, with music by Ray Green.

The Bochette Dancers include local dancers Mariquita Anderson, Jennifer Reed, Lynn Vosloo, Kelley Natella, and Gerri Reaves, and the performance features actors Katie Pankow and Jim Brock.  Music for the reception and intermission will be performed by pianist Mary Seal.

With collaboration in staging and lighting design by Edison State College theater director, Stuart Brown, Alyce Bochette brings together original music and video by Rodney Woolsey and original poetry by Jim Brock, created specifically for the dance.  The performance builds on the theme of salvaging, with modern dance that is accessible, lyrical, vibrant, and whimsical.

Bochette wants her audience to consider the dynamic of salvaging in their own lives, whether it is spiritual, familial, ecological, or nostalgic, in which we seek to reclaim, recover, remember, and even revise our own lives.  The event brings together the audience as community.  It also affords each of us a little space for personal reflection.

The event begins with a 7:00 p.m. reception, and performance at 8:00 p.m. at the Sidney and Berne Davis Arts Center in the River District of Fort Myers at 2301 First Street.  Tickets are $35. Student tickets with student seating are $15. For more information and tickets, call the box office at (239) 333-1933 or visit the website at www.sbdac.com.
